Favourite beach - and that's a big call given we have an abundance of great beaches here in Sydney. Why so good? Well first up it's a harbour beach (so dont go if surf is what you ar after) that is situated on the edge of a lovely piece of National Park. So it's surrounded by large mature trees. It... More

We have visted this area three times now, once we had a picnic and a swim, the next time we did the coastal walk. It is a lovely spot and the coastal walk takes you past some lovely homes. Great way to spend an hour or two.

This is a nice little hidden gem beach and park on Sydney's harbour. Steps cascade down to the small sandy beach from the promenade where there is a cute cafe in an old cottage building. It's like stepping back in time to the more serene days of "bathing". There's also a big spacious parkland with really old big trees that... More

This was a preferred spot when we lived in Sydney although parking is a hassle unless you go during the week which is the recommended time to go. It gets very crowded with families at weekends in good weather. There is food available but you are far better off making your own picnic and saving $$. Safe swimming area is... More

Away from the pounding surf beaches, the harbour has several calm bays and pools worth visiting. Nielsen Park has a delightful park full of mature trees and picnic grass, a perfect bay for swimming complete with shark net, a lovely kiosk and cafe, a historic house and, in summer, fish and chips served from the bayside stilt hut at weekends.... I'm torn between telling visitors to Sydney to see this gem, and selfishly hoping people will keep away! Busy during the hot months, Nielsen's charm can better be savoured on a sunny day in the cooler seasons. Swim in the shark-netted water, picnic on the shaded grass nearby, go for a short walk in the surrounding bushland (part of Sydney... More

Go here for a picnic and a swim with lots of shade and a beautiful view of the harbour.
