Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I went to Sheebeen with a girlfriend for an after work beer. It's a cute little spot in a lane way with healthy options that are nice to nibble on. They have an amazing selection of alcohol and the staff are just lovely and so accommodating. The back room is amazing too with a slight Moroccan theme you could say. Overall would go again, a very relaxed place.

We went for a drink. I had a hankering for a bloody mary. They had a bloody maria on the menu but it was $19 !!! I thought it must be good. The guy behind the bar asked if I like spicy, I replied that I did, he asked me a couple more times if I was sure because often people found their bloody maria too spicy. Yes, yes, I assured him. Because it was my birthday I splashed out. My friends were half way through their $10 beers before it arrived, looking slightly forlorn - some thinly sliced commercial cucumber sitting on top on a skewer (you know the type that comes vacuum-wrapped in plastic), and a bad paper flamingo or something stuck close to the top of the straw so that I had to remove it, which took a while. All this I would not even mention if the bloody maria had have lived up to the $19 price tag expectation.... it was bland, I couldn't taste any alcohol (did they forget to put it in?), there was certainly no spice, and even the tomato juice was watery. It might be a small trendy bar in a small trendy lane but I'm not enough of a hipster to go back.

The menu here isn't extensive but for a couple of drinks and snacks it's pretty good. The profits, apparently, go to third world projects so that's all to the good. Mind, the prices are on the high side but the cause is good. Give it a go.

Had drinks here whilst waiting for our table to be free in a restaurant close by. Nice little find. Small trendy bar with friendly staff. Drinks menu good with very different choices from wines, beers to cocktails. Didn't have long to really take it all in but would go back.

Really can't get enough of this hidden gem. It looks tiny from the outside but plenty of space both at the front bar and in the back. Drinks are great and food is tasty. Anyone looking for a true Melbourne spot should head here.

Lunch with a six month old baby in downtown Melbourne on a busy Friday is never going to be easy, but we happened upon Shebeen and it seemed a little quieter and more baby friendly than some cafés.
We were warmly greeted and the service in general was great. The menu is small, but interesting and the whole concept behind Shebeen is inspiring. After wages, overheads, produce purchasing etc, 100% of the profits from the café go towards addressing poverty in the countries from where various products are sourced. So a percentage of the $9ish I paid for my Chilean wine, goes towards programmes in Chile...now that makes me want to drink a lot of wine!
My chicken mole was delicious, and my daughter's beef curry was tasty...the servings are smallish...but that just leaves room for dessert.
We were really pleased to find Shebeen and would return if time slowed.

This establishment was recommended by a local foodie as a nice spot for lunch. The menu was innovative, the atmosphere was laid back and the food was very tasty. We had the Ethiopian Beriberi stew, a couple of beers and walked out with change from a $20.00. Great little place.

Came here on a Friday night. It was quite busy in the main dining room, we got the last table. Out the front would've been nicer as there's less noise from the pumping music, (it was hard to have a conversation) but all the tables were taken there.

Ordered a curry (vegan), salad with pork and some nibbles to go with the Beer Laos (profits to help train young adults to work in data entry). The meals were small but quite tasty, though I wasn't a fan of the pancake-like flat bread that came with curry. Also the nibbles (broad beans) had a weird taste and there didn't seem to be any almonds in there like the menu stated.

Overall I'd say it's worth coming here once, but won't be in a hurry to come back.

Down to earth and a menu that gives back. A real character in Melbourne. Come here to buy a drink that gives back to a charity in the country the drink originates from.

While you're at it try the sliders in multiples, and my fav the salads. Staff are friendly and funny location is perfect and decor is quirky. You'll love it.
