We had been meaning to visit Nikau Caves for a few years and had taken a trip out that way a few times and had coffee and lunch at their restaurant which has fabulous views. When some friends came to stay we decided to book as we had been to Waitomo Caves before and they were quite expensive and the...

I arranged a family lunch in this cafe , the food was delicious and the price very reasonable . We ate inside looking out at the hills , fresh flowers on the table , good unintrusive service , then had coffee and dessert outside on the terrace . The owners are friendly and welcoming. I really recommend this place ,...

We have been to the Waitomo caves, which are worth seeing and very impressive, but Nikau cave is far more our type of place. No crowds, and a personal trip through a lovely cave system. Lasted about 2 hours and although fine for our group (age range 50 to 9) it might be a bit challenging for anyone physically challenged...

The drive to Nikau Cave from Port Waikato is one of the most unexpectedly beautiful drives in New Zealand. It takes a while to get there but it is time well spent in an untravelled part of the country.
The Nikau Cave experience is brilliant, and educational and involves a spectacular walk through an enchanting cave system.

Although you'll need a car to get here from Auckland, it's worth it. I went on a cave tour with only 4 people so you get a very personal experience. You'll see amazing cave formations and glow worms! It's an experience where you can learn and enjoy at your own pace rather than with a large tour group.
Make sure...

Go and explore this cave. Get up close to nature in the cave. You spend over an hour in the cave as you work your way up the river. The squeeze is brilliant. This is a must. Enjoy the cafe after your adventure. This is a must if you are anywhere near here. In fact make a detour and experience...

As someone who actually has done caving properly (ie not as a tour guide, but getting flithy and having too much fun!!), I was extremely impressed by Nikau Cave. The cave formations are quite beautiful, and the guide knows his stuff. It is also a great way to experience caving for a begineer (such as my husband) to see if...

Wonderful place to explore - kids would love this.
Very impressive cave formations, the tour guide is not an expert, he's just the landowner so the tours aren't too informative but it's enough to be taken through. One part I was worried about was crawling through a section but it's actually nothing to worry about. It's actually very refreshing going on hands and knees through the stream!
