The museum is interesting, with some great exhibitions such as the ones about Maori culture and the very moving Holocaust exhibition. However, it also has some lacklustre ones like the natural history section which does not stand up to British museums such as Natural History Museum.
I highly recommend getting a ticket for the Maori cultural performance and also for...

As the name implies (Auckland WAR museum), a huge amount of emphasis (one of the three floors) is on the history of New Zealand in War. Fitting and impressive displays, but not a lot to engage if war isn't your thing.
The first two floors had more for kids including a "volcano house", roughly comparable to Te Papa's "earthquake house"...

Nice museum by NZ standards, but of course, does not compare with the European / American museums I have visited
From top of Queen Street Auckland you can walk over Grafton Gully bridge to the museum which is in the Auckland Domain. It would probably take you about 30 minutes to do this walk. Longer if you stop off for a coffee on the way !
Museum had alot of Maori & Pacific Island artefacts which we were eager to...

The bookstore and cafe were also excellent. HOWEVER, while you are being mezmorized by the exhibits inside,...

It is on a hill and looks down to the Auckland harbour. It is also a place where many important events of the city were hosted. Its full name is actually Auckland War Memorial Museum, but you can find and see the whole New Zealand's nature, history, culture inside it. The Maere (Maori's traditional house) was beautiful, don't forget to...

I am a local and hadn't visited for many years. There were many exhibits that hadn't changed and others that had since been added. I think the set up for visitors is better now with improved facilities and directions. It has an obvious NZ and Pacific bias which suit some and not others. The war memorial section is worth visiting...
