What an amazing history underneath and above this incredible building! Almost demolished it is now preserved for us to enjoy its story. Once a hospital offering unbelievable 'cures' which seem worse than the complaints, then a nightclub with dubious goings-on and now an inspiring museum, cafe and gift shop, this is a definite must for visitors to Rotorua. The cinema... More

Because it was raining in the morning, we thought we would start out in the museum and then go on to the thermal attractions. We got to the front desk of the museum and discovered that entry was $18 per person!! Interestingly enough, there was a sign that said if a customer did not like the museum in the first... More

Thanks for your review, although it's a pity you decided not to come in. As you say, we have a 10 minute money back guarantee so people can pay the entry fee, come in and have a look around, and if they don't like what they see they can get their money back. It is very rare for anyone to... More

This little museum is set in a beautiful colonial building, and gives an insight into life in early colonial settlement.

As usual we didn't have a lot of time but we loved the museum at Rotorua. My son had just been reading about Anne Frank at school so he was keen to see the exhibition. I was amazed to see him sit through the entire video then read all the info, timelines etc. It was really set out and staff... More

Rotorua Museum recently celebrated 100 years since the building opened. It is a New Zealand icon, inviting one to enter. Inside you are greeted by a double curving staircase made of Totora, interlinked with no nails. There are several galleries in the museum concentrating on the geothermal region and the Mt Tarawera eruption; a gallery showcasing the local Te Arawa... More

Took a guided tour. One of the better museums I have been to. Enjoyed the section on local Maori culture, and the story of the thermal baths where people came to for health cures.

A lot of thought has gone into this. The exhibitions are fantastic as is the cinema which will give you a jolt when you least expect it.

I had not visited this museum before, but if you want to know anything and everything about the Maori culture of this area, this is definitly the place to go. Very well presented and I need to go back to see more!
