Not sure I should be putting this out there - but Ohinemutu is the best free tourist site in NZ. Amazing little church and graveyard and just fascinating to see how man has adapted to the wierdness of nature so that the two can live side by side.

Great place to visit if you want to see how people live in the thermal area, you are tired of a lot of tourists and want to save money. The church is nice. You can also have a short walk along the lake.
