Well named, this was the first thermal area we had ever visited and enjoyed the hour we spent walking round, but it is modest in scope and range when compared with the larger thermal parks in the area, take it in if you have time but not a must do
This was the first thermal site we visited and whilst not the most impressive it had a number of colourful craters and was well laid out. It was a very good one hour walk and well worth the small entrance fee.
We visited a few thermal park/grounds during our recent trip to North Island, including the Craters of the Moon near Taupo (NZ$6 per adult, NZ$2.5 per child). We enjoyed our hour spent on the Craters of the Moon grounds. The terrain is nice and the walking trail good enough. There wasn't that much thermal activity or things to see, compared...

I love wandering around thermal areas and this is one of the best. Watching and listening to the mud bubble and the steam hiss out of the ground is always fascinating.
Hadn't been to Craters of the Moon for about 12 years so was expecting a few changes. Wow, a visitors centre, shop, good loos have all been added and run by volunteers - well done the trust members who run the attraction. A good boardwalk takes you around the area with good signage and warnings.
Take your camera, water and step into an almost alien landscape, must do if your're down taupo way, not too expensive and no need for mammoth levels of fitness as theres a gentle path meandering between the holes in the earth. (There is also a small hill climb if you want to see some great views)
Lots of boiling mud,...

Those who remember Craters of the Moon of several years ago will be very disappointed. The volcanic activity has dwindled. The service club that provides security does a great job and provides peace of mind while your car is parked nearby.
Craters of the Moon is very well priced at $6 per adult and $2.50 per child. It is a charitable organisation preserving a geothernal active area. The ladies on the desk were chatty and friendly.
You follow a clearly marked pathway. The walk around the attraction can take fropm 40 to 60 minutes depending on your walking speed and if...

Breathtaking views of the geysers and geothermal activity areas, took a short walk around and really enjoyed it. The walk takes about 45 minutes and is mostly along a gravel path or boardwalk. At only $6.00 it is a very small price to pay for this great natural attraction.
