This was on the itinerary because it was the easiest place to see complete Moa skeletons. We actually spent considerably more time there than we expected because it has an interesting and eclectic collection created by the early curators trading Moa bones for other artifacts. For, example it has the largest piece of the Arizona meteorite outside of the US... more

There were great and informative displays of various themes, such as antartic adventure, transportation, birds of NZ, Maori culture, the extinction of the moa, etc. Interestingly, they cleverly occupied the children by creating a "look for Santa" competition, where kids have to look for about 20 Santa toys among all the various exhibits. The Canterbury Museum is a nice, regional museum. It's a very comprehensive natural history museum, with exhibits on a number of topics. But having traveled around the world, seeing lots of museums, I wasn't particularly impressed. I live in Christchurch and like museums. The museum is quite good on exhibits of Maori history and has recently installed an Antarctic exhibition. Children (9 and 11) quite enjoy going Worth visiting, has a cafe at the top. Hagley Park is immediately behind the museum and lovely to stroll around/let the children have a run around.
