This area is underutilised, it is a pity some of the locals use it like a rubbish dump, the gardens and walkways are perfect for a stroll.
New Zealand has some wonderful gardens. While this might lack the drama of Wellington's Botanic Gardens, the collection of roses is amoung the best in the world. There is one just for modern roses and a separate one for vintage plants. At the height of rose season, you will not find a more spectacular selection anywhere in the world.
The gardens are not really highlighted or signposted so most people will miss the very pleasant walk alongside the stream as it wends its way through Invercargill. The gardens are nicely laid out and make a pleasant contrast to the bustle of the busy streets a block or two away.
The Otepuni Gardens follow the river of the same name, ambling across several blocks to the south of Invercargill. Lined with wide pathways and full of colourful and well maintained flower beds, the gardens area is a lovely place to walk or to sit and relax. Within 5 minutes of the centre of town they are easily accessible.
