In the darkness they produce a glittering display. Carved out by the force of the river, the underground world is surprisingly beautiful with whirlpools and roaring waterfalls. Begin with a scenic cruise across Lake Te Anau and then our nature guides will take you through the caves in small groups and in boats. Departs Te Anau. « less

Cost is $63 pp adult and $20 per child. Trip to the caves is @25 min each way via catamaran boat with some screaming kids/adults (not fault of real tours--just rude people we guess). then you get sectioned off into parties of 14, the others are off to 'explore' the woods and/or see the water as the group goes through... more

I would still recommend this because it is the biggest draw in Te Anau but don't set your expectations too high. There is a longish boat ride to and from the glowworm cave and the glowworm cave visit was not particularly exciting but if you are out in Te Anau on your way to Milford Sound, give it a shot. more

I absolutely loved this trip. We spent only 2 weeks in New Zealand but the glow worm caves is something I hope I never forget. It was really magical to see the tiny 'lights' in the cave when they shut off all the lights and you just sit there in silence and awe for a few minutes. Definitely worth the... more

I just got back from 2 weeks in the South Island. Hesitant to see the caves after some of the reviews, but it was totally worth it. There's a 10-15 minute boat ride to the caves, so I would time it for an afternoon visit - the sun setting across Lake Te Anau was so lovely. A guide then takes... more

We decided to take a trip to the Glowworm Caves during our trip to Queenstown in July. The brochure certainly looked enticing! The total one way journey from Queenstown took 4 hours (including the ferry ride). The ferry, bookings and tour was all handled very well. What was ultimately very disappointing were the actual caves themselves. The actual guided tour... more

I found this trip to be seriously overpriced for what you got. We went on the evening tour, so the boat leaves at 7pm for a trip across the lake in the dark - takes about 30 mins. Then we went onto this island and walked around on these narrow metal grates for ages, then through the cave. The actual... more

We went on this Real Journeys trip during our honeymoon in March 2006. We took the evening trip (8:15pm) on our one night in Te Anau. Everyone got on board the boat which took us over to the west side of Lake Te Anua, around a half hour journey (it's a big lake!). As we got off the boat, I... more
