The attraction that brought us here was the original Eureka flag, shown in an impressive dimly lit setting. (The gallery also sells the picture book "The Night We Made the Flag" - highly recommended by this librarian!) The Ballarat Fine Art Gallery is in a wonderful historic precinct of 1860s or so gold-rush era bluestone and brick buildings, about 100 metres south of Ballarat's equally impressive 1862 railway station. The gallery may appear deserted but don't let that put you off. There is plenty of space to admire the exhibits, and the usual coffee table type books... more
