We took a wrong turn and ended up at Lake Kaniere. What an awesome error! This lake area is sooo serene and the surrounding hills are a spectacle. Drive further on past the camp ground on to Dorothy Falls, you won't regret the scenic passage.

It is worth allocating a half day to do a loop around the Lake kaniere area (the locals seem to call it Lake Canary). It is well signposted from Hokitika. The gravel road is an easy drive, if a bit dusty. There is a lovely waterfall right beside the road and several places to walk in the forest to the...

Wow..took our mountain bikes on the raceway track..great ride..go to see many old mining relics including the water troughs. The lake is beautiful..make sure to see Dororothy Falls and the Gorge.

We found this lake on the way back from Hokitika Gorge, and it looked like a lovely spot to spend a leisurely day.
