I visited Wawel today, in deepest, darkest February. On the plus side, it was pretty quiet with the exception of a couple of school parties running amok. There is a lot to see at Wawel -- magnificent architecture, wonderful statues... the castle itself is huge, and maybe it would have been beneficial to go on a tour, as I was slightly unsure about what I was looking at. more

A fascinating place with so much history over the last 800 years or so. Worth seeing and getting a guide. If you're going to spend some time in the Wawel complex, I'd suggest visiting the Royal Apartments rather than the State apartments - they contain very similar artefacts, and the former are explained by a guide who might speak your language - our guide was excellent, very knowledgeable and good English skills. Although it was cheap to visit the castle we found it disappointing, esp the state rooms and the dragons lair!! The Wawel grounds are beautiful and the setting majestic. It is irritating that you have to buy tickets one place for everywhere, and the place does get completely overrun with school groups.
