We've been to the central market once during our 5-days trip to Budapest- it's pretty, it's folk. Typical products are exposed, and you can find almost anything to eat at the ground floor-from fruits and vegetables to meat and sweets-exposed in their odd original way. It is full of colours and, even if I hadn't compared the prices- it seemed... more

Downstairs is fresh produce including cheese, meat, fruit and vegetables. Upstairs has some local crafts for tourists as well as a bunch of local food for a great "fast food" meal at a reasonable price (I tried the stuffed cabbage). Not terriably exciting, but a good place to pick up some fruit, have lunch and interact with some locals. more

After reading so many good reviews, we expected more from this place. Many vendors selling similar items, upstairs some interesting local dining spots with so many people standing that it was difficult to naviagate the narrow space to walk. This did not seem so special--there are a number of great attractions in Budapest--I would not waste my time going to... more

I'm not 100% convinced that this is where the locals go to buy their groceries, as a significant proportion of the stalls seem to be selling salamis & paprika, but it's well worth spending an hour or two here just for the chance to eat some good cheap Hungarian food. The ground level has endless stalls selling dried meats, goose... more

I like local markets. As I stayed in Danubius Hotel Gellert which is directly connected to this Central Market by a bridge, I visited this market nearly everyday. The bottled water and souvenirs here seem to be the cheapest I have seen in Budapest. But the price for same item differs for different stalls and so don't buy unless you... more

We enjoyed a stroll through this market on a Monday morning. At this time, anyway, it seemed like a place where locals shop - not just a market that catered to tourists. It was interesting to browse all of the food available - a must for any foodie - and to try some traditional Hungarian pastries. We also bought some... more

We had to walk past the market hall pretty much every day, so we got a few looks at it. It's fairly big and has enough room to have a leisurely wander around the numerous stalls. On the ground floor, you'll walk past a paprika stall, then another, etc. And the same can be said about meat, pastry, veg, etc.... more

Excellent place to go to buy your paprika and souvenirs. the first hall when you walk in from the main entrance is full of fruit, veg, meat, bread, paprika, cheese etc, all at excellent prices. The upper level is mostly souvenirs which are a lot cheaper than you'll buy on the main streets. I would definately recommend a visit to... more

We took an hour to look for souvenirs in the upstairs craft area. There were plenty of places that had tablecloths, women's scarves (pashmina), shirts, trinkets, magnets, toys, and all of those kinds of things. On the upstairs levels there were also several food bar type of places where you could order lunch. Downstairs was the food market that had... more

Having been in markets throughout Europe I found this one to be pretty mundane, in that there was a lot of repitition, sausage and cured meats....more sausage and cured meats.... apples, cabbage and oranges...more apples cabbage and oranges - though this was in part due to the time of year (Feb). They have a souvenir section upstairs but it is... more
