Heroe's Square, marks the entrance to City Park in Budapest, which sits at one end of Andrassy, Budapest's Champs-Elysee. It is a sparkling marble square places between the Museum of Fine Arts and the Palace of Art, and housing statues of great leaders from Hungary's past. The column in the center is surrounded by statues of the Seven Magyar Chieftans... More

Listed by UNESCO. As a Workd Heritage Site, it is one of Budapests most impressive spaces. It's sheer immensity is impressive as well as it's open space in which so much goes on - from tourists photographing the exquisite buildings (now museums and galleries) either side of the square to locals break dancing :)

The name of the square says it all... Hungarians are very proud of their history. And their former empire lasting 1000 years. Obviously, you can't boast more, than build a square with massive statues of all important men standing next to each other.

What made this interesting for us was reading the entries in Rick Steve's book describing each of the historical figures. Without something like this guide, much of the significance of the site could be lost. Heroes Square is the entry to a beautiful park.

It has the fancy architecture with columns and such, but doesn't really tell the story of what it is commemorating. And it isn't near all that much else in Budapest, although the park next to it is quite nice.

Make sure you walk from Heroes Square (this monument) right down through Andrassy Utca, as it is a beautiful avenue. Also, a free concert is hosted by T-Mobile near Heroes Square every year. It attracts hundreds of thousands of people.

I liked hearing the history of the memorial and how it is divided into two parts- the right being the strong Hungarian kings and the left being the less honor-worthy Ottoman leaders.
