Anyone who lives in Budapest for any length of time knows about the reality of Szimpla Kert. Its beer is watered down. The 'security' outside is run by the local mafia and the vast majority of its clientele are non-Hungarians. There are so many great bars in Budapest, so please don't support such a terrible example. Honestly not sure if we went to Szimpla Kert or Cafe last night, but it was a good time. Huge bar area with plenty of seating both inside and out. Its not your "urban zinc-everything" style bar, quite the opposite - looks grungy, but has character. Drinks were reasonable priced, and being able to sit outside in the courtyard area... more

I visited Budapest for the first time in August 2008 and was blown away by everything I saw. Szimpla Kert, to me, summed up Budapest: a laidback mixture of old and new, delightfully whimsical with interesting details that all seem to have a story of their own. The decor is ballsy, quite simply put. My hat's off to the designer... more
