The Ninth Fort in Kaunas, Lithuania is fabulous! It is full of history and GREAT for "history buffs" like myself. The fort was built in 1913 when Lithuania was part of the Russian Empire. Our guide was young, handsome, and extremely informative. His English was most impressive! A guided tour is inexpensive. It is cold and dark in the vaults... More

Breath taking site. Very worth visiting and learning the history of the country and WW II in Europe.

Book a guide, because than you will have access to the vaults and tunnels of the complex. They keep the place in good shape.

We visited the Ninth Fort one afternoon on our first visit to Kaunas. It is a really humbling experience being in the Fort. There are English tours available that take you into the tunnels underneath the Fort if enough people are paying the tour fee. Fortunately for us, a Lithuanian tour was about to start and one of the people... More

I tried to find the Fort, its not on the Map and the guide books and tourist maps do not tell you how to get there, unfortunatley I had forgotten to bring my english guide.Result could not visit. it would appear this is not a high priority for tourists to visit, wonder why? Went to this site with a group of 15 year old students. The first 45 minutes takes place within the soldier's barracks/prison - and the novelty/enthusiast of the place can quickly wear away. Adults will certainly find it interesting, although I started feeling some boredom creeping in - you can imagine how teenagers would feel about this. The second part... More

Given its a way out of town we got a taxi to and from the 9th Fort - was around 30Lt. There's a modern museum then up the hill the actual fort. Both are very moving. Most of the material has English translations. Make sure you buy a ticket in the lower museum first as you can't buy them in... More

Firstly despite studying Google earth and having a car it took ages to find the place, despite it being close to main roads - websites or advertising could do so much more in the way of directions. The attraction is in three parts. Firstly a large soviet era, soviet style museum which was built to commemorate the evil doings of... More
