It's not only a place of worship but also a former city gate that stood in the defensive wall of the city, that existed for nearly 400 years. The picture is said to have miraculous healing powers as well. The late Pope John Paul II visited this picture on his visit to Lithuania. more

Inside the gate of dawn is a picture of the Virgin Mary which many people come to see on a pilgimage... I wasn't on pilgrimage, but I did think the gate is a pretty wonderful sight.
