Built between 1894 and 1900 when Estonia was part of the Tsarist Russian Empire, Tallinn's largest Cathedral sits right at the top of Toompea Hill, in the Old Town. It was nearly demolished in 1924 but has instead been beautifully restored, and is easily recogniseable with it's five onion domes and beautiful paintwork. This was my favourite place in Tallinn. Although in history there were plans to knock it down as not in keeping with the old town area, it looks amazing. If you go to Tallinn, do not miss a trip to the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral up on Toompea Hill. It's a wonderful site from the outside, but the inside will take your breath away.
