Being a mature person, I had thought I knew a lot about 'World' History but sadly I did not realise my lack of knowledge of Latvia until I went to this Museum! Within my lifetime of 58 years, I began to realise in touring this museum, so much had happened within Latvia and this museum gave me an insight particularly... more

Total propaganda! I lived in Latvia before 1993 and from personal experience can tell you it was not all bad. Latvia was a dictatorship when it was occupied by the soviets with complete supression of freedom of speech by the Ulmanis government. Why is it they don;t talk about early German occupation when Latvians were not even allowed to enter... more

I found this museum to be one of the best historical collections I've ever seen. The exhibits and information are exhaustive in their detail, and the inclusion of prisoner-crafted objects like violins or picture books was very touching. To address a dissenting opinion: I find it hard to believe that describing the horrors of two (two!) Soviet Occupations and the... more

If you are in Riga to hear about how terrible it was to live in the Soviet Union then this museum is for you. Otherwise don't spend any time on this propaganda piece and learn your history from less biased sources, or better, just enjoy this charming city without the politics. For every time period in history, it's not too... more

My Grandparents lived in Latvia during the initial Soviet & German ocuupations, and were forced to flee as displaced persons. I've grown up knowing some of the stories, but being there and seeing just what the Latvians suffered had me in tears. The museum has a room that is a replica of a Soviet Gulag cabin. We saw another visitor... more

We spent a couple of hours in this excellent museum in the Old City. It charts very graphically the occupation of Latvia first by the Russians, then by the Germans and then again by the Russians. It is full of archive materials like photographs, documents, etc. You cannot help but feel for the people and what the endured in the... more

An essintial museum to visit to understand the extreme difficulties that Riga and Latvia faced during the 20th century under Soviet and Nazi occuppations. If you visit Riga then spend an hour or so in this museum that shows how life was for lavians. The building is ugly, but the inside is really interesting and moving. more
