guides are hanging around the square, a good one will have lots of stories about the different places
There was a town squere once, when these nice buildings and other ones not so nice were not rebuilt. Now it is half of the previous space. The newly rebuilt beautiful buildings are in a dissonance with surrounding uggly buildings, so the general impression is not so good.
Recommend eating at the Whiskey (beer) house on old square.
The story of the occupations of Latvia, first by the Ruissians, then the Germans and then the Russians again, is one often lost in the dark history of the Second World War, but one that deserves to be told.
This museum tells that story through multi-media presentations in a simple but effective timeline. Go, learn as much as you can...

Great coffee houses and bakeries. It was cold and snowing but warm in the coffee houses. Very clean and lots of photo opportunities.
It's the most beautiful spot in Riga! Should be on Must see list!
With nice buildings surround it, but the dark museum of occupation makes a little negative inpact on the area.
Stand in the square and you are surrounded by history
