The Old town area is beautiful with its old historic buildings. I was there during some festival in May where people were in traditional dress and also in historic costumes. There were open air markets, with traditional dancing and music. It couldn't have been lovelier. more

It was surprisingly the quantity, quality and originality of "Art Nouveau" in buildings in Riga. You may find a lot of them in the city center. But if you go to Elizabetes iela, and streets around, you may be astonished with all this architecture style. Many cities in Eastern Europe have beautiful and interesting "old town" sections full of old buildings and new cafes and shops, but Riga's old town is probably the best I've seen. The people here have done an excellent job of retaining the character of the old architecture and have apparently strictly enforced their regulations on maintaining that character when buildings... more
