Camped here in February 2012 and loved it. Arrived mid-day with no reservation (first-come until April 1) and scored a fantastic campsite (no. 82). There were perhaps 15 others in the entire campground, and I had the entire mile-long beach to myself. Incredible sunset was a bonus. I imagine this place is ridiculously crowded and impossible to get a site... More

My wife, Conejolita and I have lived in the Los Angeles area for close to 30 years now. We both grew up in the Cape Cod area where beaches are the main attraction. We have traveled up and down the coast of California, what must be hundreds of times. And no matter how many times we make that drive up... More

We camped at the State park on the cliffs just above the beach and were able to just walk down to the beach easily. not too crowded on weekdays and perfect temps. don't miss the sunsets.

We got there and the beach was beautiful we set out a blanket and our umbrella had sandwiches on the beach and just had fun. The beach was clean and it wasn't packed with people, there was families but it wasn't too bad. The sand was clean and the water felt great! Looking out at the ocean there was dolphins... More

It was nothing but a positive experience. We were visiting from a beautiful San Diego – there are not many places in California to compare San Diego tom but this was absolutely wonderful. First, yes...there is some noise from the highway and the train, but to me, highway was a background noise and the train I hardly noticed....didn't wake me... More

Our family had an amazing time at El Capitan. Our site was huge and backed up to the trail along the bluff. Site 83. My 9 month old and 3 year old both slept through the night and were not bothered by any noise. I think they were actually soothed by the sound of the waves crashing below. I don't... More

We just got back from our sixth trip to El Capitan. Everything the previous reviewers say is true. There's a lot of noise from the highway. The train rumbles through at night and wakes you up. There's naturally occurring tar on the beach that will get on your feet and you'll have to buy tar removal pads at the store... More

The location is very beautiful. The beach is very nice as well and only 2.5 miles away from an even prettier beach (Refugio State Beach). It's wooded, has lots of skunks and poison oak. We cut our trip short because we were scared that our two year old could get into the poison oak that surounded our site. The people... More

Okay, only gave it 3 stars last year but the beauty of the place made us want to try it again & we're sure glad we did! It was even more beautiful than before because all the rains this past few months have left it greener & more lush than before. The beach itself & views from the bluff-top sites... More

We recently camped at El Capitan State Park in California. It was a beautiful place to camp. The staff and other campers were very friendly, the beach was gorgeous and not crowded and the dolphins were playing continually off shore. This was a great spot to camp and a great place to stay with the family
