We camped at the State park on the cliffs just above the beach and were able to just walk down to the beach easily. not too crowded on weekdays and perfect temps. don't miss the sunsets.

We just got back from our sixth trip to El Capitan. Everything the previous reviewers say is true. There's a lot of noise from the highway. The train rumbles through at night and wakes you up. There's naturally occurring tar on the beach that will get on your feet and you'll have to buy tar removal pads at the store... More

The location is very beautiful. The beach is very nice as well and only 2.5 miles away from an even prettier beach (Refugio State Beach). It's wooded, has lots of skunks and poison oak. We recently camped at El Capitan State Park in California. It was a beautiful place to camp. The staff and other campers were very friendly, the beach was gorgeous and not crowded and the dolphins were playing continually off shore. This was a great spot to camp and a great place to stay with the family
