In early April 2009 we were able to visit the Cherry Blossom Festival. The blossoms are spectacular. Thanks to our Japanese friends, America received the gift of the original trees about 90 years ago. We walked to the Tidal Basin, which is near the Washington monument. It had rained the night before and the morning had continued with some showers.... more

Awesome in the fall and spring if you can aviod the crowds in the spring for the cherry blossoms. But sadly folks forget about this place the rest of the year. It makes for a quiet and peaceful walk. We chose to walk around the Tidal Basin rather than taking a tour bus. My recommendation would be a better Metro stop for the area as it became a little difficult journey with a young one. The sights are really very pretty, especially in the Spring. The paddle boats can be a bit of a slog, so be prepared for a workout. The staff handling the boats, unfortunately, are surly and uncommunicative. You'll be left to guess as to how to return them and barked at if you guess wrong. This area in DC is a great place to take a walk. Cherry trees line the walk way around the basin and give way to great picture taking opportunities of the Washington Monument and the Jefferson Memorial. On our most recent visit we rented paddle boats for just a few bucks. It was a wonderful way to spend the afternoon.... more

If you've done the Tidal Basin circuit, and are bone weary for a place to sit and some food, a little known place is the Fish Market on Maine/Water Streets. You need to be on the side of the Basin that is near the Jefferson Memorial/Bureau of Printing-Engraving. There is a road between the two of those that is Maine... more
