I was excited to see washington...and this monument...but what a let down. Its really just a tall pole with many cracks in it...the park surrounding the area is not even nice, i expected golf ''greens'' type lawns around these washington attractions but its all junk grass, you can barely see the capitol building and looking the other way the whole... I climbed the Washington Monument when I was in high school returning many years later as an adult. However, as an adult I should have known better and first checked to see if any DC attractions were closed. I learrned my lesson, for not just DC, but everywhere I now visit

Has been closed since the august 2011 earthquake. Repairs have not even begun, which is really sad.

I had heard so much about the monument and seen so much of it on TV and films, and believe me when I say, the hype is worth it. You have to see it yourself to believe it. I was awed by the size of the monument, a testament to the architects who built it. Be prepared to walk around... More

I visited DC around 10 years ago and was able to go into the Monument, which was really great. However, now you just stand at the base and look up, no one is allowed in. I think the lure now is the novelty of being able to see the Monument from different other locations, but you don't get any additional... More

It was amazing to see the monument in person after seeing it on TV so many times. However, after a small earthquake in the D.C. area last August, the monument elevator is closed so you will not be able to travel to the top of it.

Years ago I climbed he steps and the challenge and view were worth it. Today it is closed due to the earthquake damage. I really hope they can repair it because it's a piece of history that needs to reopen to the public

This is a must when in Washington. You will need to arrive at the ticket office very early as the tickets sell out very quickly. It is well organised and the views from the little windows at the top are very good.
