Several floors of famous art here, some special exhibitions and something for everyone. The restaurant in the atrium is great, even if a bit expensive, and the water feature is cooling.

Soon after entering I abandoned any plans for other sightseeing that day. I am glad I did and afforded the museum the attention it deserved. The American Art and Portrait museums run seemlessly into one another. I spent 5 happy hours learning and exploring seeing most but not all - at least I will know which favorites to linger at...

Visited the museum specifically to see the Annie Leibovitz and One Life exhibits . . . both were phenomenal. Also found myself walking through the permanent exhibits as well even though I'd been there and seen them before. Definitely recommend this museum for lovers of American art.
What a great respite from the often crowded and noisy more popular museums like Natural History and Air and Space!!!! We visited the week between Christmas and New Year's and were just delighted by the scope and breadth of the collections. They seem to have a bit of everything concerning the history of American art... from paintings, drawings and sculptures...

There is a great courtyard to sit and eat. The portraits and art are first rate.
Really enjoyed this museum. The art work is amazing and each room is beautifully painted. I especially enjoyed the Norman Rockwell exhibit which ends Jan. 2, 2011 so get there soon!
I spent the better part of a day last week in the National Museum of American Art. It has a fascinating collection of paintings, photos and sculpture of famous Americans. Alongside each piece is the bonus paragraph about the person or their art that gives wonderful historical insights or facts. There are also great special exhibits...I saw the small Elvis...

There was a wonderful display entitled "1934" that showed different types of life in that year. Country, city, arts, entertainment, farming, manufacturing. If you can think of it, and it was done artistically to display that year, it was there....

I am not really an art lover, but this was actually an interesting museum. The only reason we went is because it was in the same building as the Portrait Gallery. This museum has a little bit of everything (paintings, sculptures, crafts, etc.).
