If you're in Washington DC and have a few hours to spare a visit to the National Gallery is a great way to spend them. It's part of the Smithsonian collection of museums and is therefore free. There are actually two buildings - and East and West wing - and a vast collection of sculptures, paintings and drawings covering many... more

Plan to stay the entire day at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. I started at the East building which houses the Gallery's contemporary art collection. Be sure and enjoy the architecture as you pass through the tunnel to the West Building. Wonderful shopping at a their bookstore, a children's store and the gift shop. You can stop... more

I've spent quite a bit of time in D.C. and just returned from a week-long visit. I have to say that I had the same experience with the security guards at the National Gallery that I had 5 years ago. This group of guards are the most unpleasant, non-friendly, and rudest group in the area. They do not greet you... more

I have spent days in this museum. The quality of art is unparalleled in the US and there's lots of it. Take it slow, revisit often - I promise you it will grow on you. If you love art this is your first stop in DC. more

This gallery is probably one of the least charismatic and interesting galleries that I've ever been to (quite a few). It may be full of the art of masters; yet, I did not see any real 'masterpieces'. A far fetch from the galleries of Florence, Paris, Rome and even London, it lacks atmosphere and to me was just a large... more

I love the NGA; I take my students there all the time. The rules though are a bit strange and inconsistent. They allow photographs and yet my students have been yelled at by security for using their cameras. They do not allow cell phones yet I see the security guards texting and playing games on their phones all the time.... more

I absolutely loved it. This is an absolute must for a trip to Washington DC. I was grateful to have seen so many famous pieces in person. more

One of my top three things to do in Washington. A spectacular museaum to visit, even if you are not an art aficionado but even more so if you are. more

I am a huge fan of European Medieval and Renaissance religious art, and love spending time at the National Gallery of Art. The gallery is a 10 minute walk from the Smithsonian Metro stop, which I believe is on the orange or blue line. Like the other Smithsonians, admission is free. My friend and I went into DC for the... more

This review is for the West Building (5) and the East Building (2 at best). The West Building is a great art museum with very traditional art up to about 1900 or so. I think I liked it better than the National Gallery in London and it's collection of prints and paintings are astounding. Whenever in DC, I try to... more
