The Mall is a must-see part of DC, but large areas are undergoing renovations--the reflecting pool has been drained for repairs and a large area of lawn near the Capitol building end has been closed. There are still ample green spaces and plenty of room to walk, and it will look beautiful once completed, but for now be prepared for... More

This is surely the heart of the city with main attractions right there, so it's an absolute must see. One warning is there is a massive construction going on right now. The big portion of the central lawn is closed and fenced. They are trying to replace soil, improve irrigation etc. and it will be going for a few more... More

The mall is amazing in itself, but I suspect without a proper guide to show it you, you would miss a lot. I did the Free2Walk tour (tip based) and it was great. We had a very entertaining and knowledgeable guide by the name of Landon Nagel. He really made the tour amazing with not only vast amounts of facts,... More

Most people think they can walk from the Captial to the Lincoln memorial all in one day. Its a long walk and you need to understand that before trying to see all the sights. Break it up in to at least two days if you can!

It doesn't get much better than a stroll along the Mall to see the museums, monuments, The White House, and kids playing. Great for a jog, walk, picnic, or chance to sit and think.

This is a must for anyone visiting DC. It involves lots of walking but it is worth every bit of the effort. Each memorial and monument has its own special place in the heart of America. Don't miss seeing a single one.

We were very moved by the war memorials. We were disappointed in finding the Washington Monument closed and the Mall reflecting pool under re-construction (both for good reasons). In general, the National Mall is looking somewhat shabby, with poor maintenance of grassy areas and of the overly-sparse shrubbery. We hope the lawns adjacent to the reflecting pool will be restored... More

I understand that there are events going on nearly every weekend and the mall is trampled on by untold numbers of people every day - but I was still shocked at how poorly kept the grounds seemed to be. Watch your step - pot holes, loose footing and roots from trees will thwart your attempts to walk. The outer rim... More

When our kids were small, we took them to fly kites on the National Mall. We had a picnic. It was a magical day. Last 4th of July my husband and I were visiting DC and went in search of more magic. What we got was unbelievable crowds, huge lines to get back on the Metro, no better fireworks than... More
