Beautiful works, but a very small museum with a very small collection

Spend the day in DC on the "Mall" and visit all the museums. Most are free (wont find this in most other Capital cities around the world). Great selection of art and the architecture is awesome too.

Watch for special exhibits. They have a great permanent collection too.

Saw a Chuch Close print exhibit there a couple years ago, very interesting, lots of examples of his work. But the permanent collection was piled up in rooms where the paintings were hung not unlike the Paris Salons of the 19th century - many of them and all the way up to the ceiling where it was hard to see... On-going source of enriching art. The traveling exhibits passing through are excellent.

A small group of very nice works. But since the Gallery is in the "forbidden zone" near the White House there is no public transportation. It is not near anything else I was seeing, so the long walk yielded small results. It looks better on line than it is. The Phillips Collection and the National Gallery are much better choices... This is not our first visit there. They do have sculptures, paintings, etc. Our main interest is the American and European oil paintings they have there. The problem is they display them three rows high in the galleries and the lighting is poor also which makes it difficult to examine the detail, the technique and the quality of the paintings.... As art museums go this is a very good one. Not a comprehensive collection of all times and cultures--it's based on one collector's interests originally--but very good in what it does.

The building is beautiful from the outside, but given that DC has great art galleries this left much to be desired. I don't think it's up to par with other Galleries in the city and it doesn't have nearly as much art as others have both in quantity and quality.
