Seeing these creatures in their natural habitat was incredible. Nothing between you and the monkeys. Reach over and pet the deer and tapir, I mean it doesn't get any better. Be warned - the zoo staff have a unstated policy of denying access to camera lenses that they consider too big! They have an issue with 70-200mm telephoto lenses and even for the use of a monopod with small lenses! There advise was to leave the "big" lense in the car!!! The Belize Zoo is billed as "The Best Little Zoo in the World". It's a cute moniker, and one we wholeheartedly agree with. Chances are you've seen it in a nature or travel show. If you are an animal lover, don't miss the Belize Zoo on the mainland. Get in touch with Sharon, the zoo director, and for a small donation to the zoo ($50US) we were able to get in a cage w/ Sharon and pet a jaguar (who was on the outside of the cage) and also had it lick our faces.... more

What a great little zoo! It's very intimate, very lush, feels like you're in the jungle! A unique experience, the animals are seperated only by heavy chicken wire. After an hour long trip from Belize City, you are guided thru this haven for these rescued animals. One word of advise, BRING INSECT SPAY ! This area is in an isolated area and tends to have plenty of insects, so beware in advance. It's worth the trip... more
