The staircase is only one of many amazing sites at Copan. You need a good quide to explain the Ruling Family linage and the significance of the text. My name and yours probably can't be read on our tomb stones after two thousand years, but Smoke Shell and 18 Rabbit's names are there for us to see. Don't miss it.

Visiting this site led me to learn about the visionary sketches of Tatiana Proskouriakoff. You must be able to imagine what this must have looked like when it was first built, and she renders it in her drawings.

The stairway takes its name from the 2200 glyphs that together form the longest known Maya hieroglyphic text. Stela M and its associated altar are at its base and a large sculpted figure is located in the centre of every 12th step. These figures are believed to represent the most important rulers in the dynastic history of the site.

It probably used to be the highlight of the ruins, but now it is kind of hidden beneath a big tarp to help preserve the stonework. I was a bit disappointed - but it's in a great location to mingle with other groups and listen to guides ;)

The staircase is one of the real stars of the ruins at Copan. It's protected by a canopy. Guides offer details in front of the stairs.

It is a shame , one of the largest Mayan text in the world, a heritage of incredible value is covered with a cheap truck cover that leaves no light for taking photos.

I am very glad the tarp is protecting the staircase. I hope to visit after the puzzle pieces are completed.

This is a one of a kind part of the Copan ruins. I've been to many of the largest Mayan ruins in Central America and this staircase is unique.

It is shaded with a tarp to protect it from the elements but sitting in front of it, looking at the details of the staircase and contemplating what the hieroglyphics mean is not to be missed.
