We booked a horseback ride on the rim. This was a 2 1/2 hour ride. We met our guide, Roy, a fifth generation Hawaiian, and took a short van ride to the stable. My husband and I were the only riders. Roy gave us a brief but thorough safety and riding orientation (we've ridden horses before, but many years ago).... More

This place is AMAZING. We hiked the road down into the valley. The road is super steep (25% grade, I read), but it's definitely worth it. I’m Hawaiian, born and raised on O’ahu, and never experienced anything like this. I had to find an activity that was family friendly. Waipi’o RideTheRim was the only tour that could accommodate anyone from 5yrs to 105yrs. You can either drive your own ATV (16yrs and older) or ride a buggy that’s driven by a guide. The buggy can fit... More

We happened to rent a jeep, so felt like we should give the crazy road down to the valley a try. People should definitely comply with the "4 wheel drive only" sign -- the jeep handled it fine, but I very much doubt a two wheel drive car would make it back up given how steep and slippery the road... Looks beautiful from above. Next time, we'll leave more time and take one of the tours into the valley as well.

Short walk down paved but steep path. No problem on the walk wearing flip flops. Gorgeous view of valley, cliffs and black sand beach against the bright blue ocean.

Went horseback riding in the Valley with a large group of family/couples. Absolutely beautiful, although I got eaten up by mosquito and was somewhat miserable! Also, dress in layers. I also was not prepared for the colder temps in the higher elevation and warmer temps in the valley. If you see the valley prepared, you should not be disappointed. Also,... More
