My husband took a spontaneous trip to South Point-Green Sand Beach on our way back from Volcanoes National Park. The drive to get to South Point is a one road, two lane drive. We drove to Green Sands a couple of days ago. It was myself, a friend and my 3 kids.. .boy,15, girl,13, and boy,11. My 15 year old has one word for that trip- AWESOME! We hiked 2.5 miles in to this beach and we were a little disappointed that the sand wasn't nearly as green as the pictures of it seemed to indicate. It's still a nice beach with pretty spectacular rock formations and worth the hike for that reason. Just don't expect the sand to be nearly as green as it shows in... more

Ok make sure you read all the reviews here about this location we just had a map from Frommers and while the book is great the map in the book really sucks. If we had not bought a more detailed map then we would have missed this hidden treasure. If you have a bad back taking a 4 wheel drive... more

Like everyone else said, this beach is beautiful. I actually enjoyed the rock formations much more than the green sand, which is actually scattered all over the island if you look for it. It's true. This beach took a very long walk to go see...but it was worth it! There are no signs leading you to the beach, so you just have to follow the trails left from four wheel drive vehicles. It takes quite a while to get there when you're walking, so be sure to bring some water with you and... more

As the other review says, this beach is remote. My recommendation is that if you plan on seeing it during your trip to the Big Island is to rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle (we had a soft-top Jeep Wrangler). That way you can drive most of the way back to the beach instead of hiking all the way. The... more

First of all, this place is a *far* walk. It may only be 2-3 miles away, but it seems much further because you have to walk up and down terrain that is not walking friendly. There were some people on ATV's which may make it easier to get to this beach. But the beauty of this beach is it's secludedness.... more
