We started the trip about 8:00 on a Monday morning and we got to Hana around 10:00. We didn't stop along the way because it was raining the whole way (though it wasn't raining in Hana or Oheo Gulch) and we thought we would stop on the way back. The drive to Hana isn't as scary as I thought it... more

The waterfalls are very beautiful, but we were so busy trying NOT to get to an accident, that you couldn't enjoy it. We could've pulled over, but we were so nervous a car would side swipe the car since the roads are SO tight. It is a nice ride if you are a passenger and if you do not get... more

This drive will test your patience. It was a very scenic trip. Please heed this advice: 1) Make sure you have a map of the stops along the way. Make sure you stop at the bamboo forest and go hiking thru til you get to the second water fall. You will spend 1-1 1/2 hours on this stop alone. The... more

i feel like i deserve a medal for driving that thing. i did this my last day, with very little time to get out and hike. i know that's not the idea, but i LOVE driving in wildernessy places, so it was definitely worthwhile. i thought it was fun, but i just said i LOVE driving. the travel books suggested... more

We just returned from a family vacation on Mauiand I wanted to post this so others would know that the Seven Sacred Pools at the end of the drive are CLOSED! About 1/2 way through someone told us but we decided to go all the way up anyway because I had remembered it to be beautiful on our honeymoon 27... more

I went to Maui in 2004, and we spent our last day on the road to Hana - not my ideal way to spend time in Hawaii. The views are beautiful, but I'd have rather spent the day outdoors on this amazing island. It's a looooong drive - if you get carsick, this will not be for you. The curves... more

All the reviews on this highway are good from each perspective. Here are my top things. 1. We left what I considered late (0730) from Kihei. Got gas at the shell station in Kahului, and sandwiches (black forest ham - very good, 8-10", $8, at the 'lunch box'?? in Paia ) and got on the road (we forgot to hit... more

I know the name sounds inviting, but stay away - DO NOT come in at all. It's a waste of your time on this long drive. There is an outrageous charge to enter the so called garden, which is a tiny plot of land that the guy at the door had beautifully portrayed on the map (handed to you after... more

The Hana Highway itself is beautiful and a real experience. However, you either swim with the fish (long lines of tourist traffic) or swim with the sharks (travel at an off-time and deal with locals who have no problem with running you off the road.) I recommend traveling with the tourists, so do your traveling on Hana Highway early in... more

Okay, everyone says, "you just HAVE to do the drive to Hana." I'm here to tell you that you don't have to! It is beautiful, but I wish I could get my day back. I get really carsick, so we rented a convertible and I took my Dramamine. I still felt AWFUL! I had really wanted to swim in the... more
