If you are going to visit the Casbah go with a local guide and do not sign-up for the package deals from Viator or Julia travel. The package tours are filled with sales pitches for carpets and others that are centered around the group tours. The lunch provided is commercialized and the you get only a short amount of time... Toured as part of Said Private Tours. Wouldn't have felt safe touring on my own. It's the poor area where residents live in small spaces and get free water from the gov't through a hose connected to a facet. Interesting to see and very enlightening. Sure makes you grateful for what you have.

The atmosphere was unique and the array of goods for sale was amazing.

We nearly didn't visit the Tangier Casbah because of negative feedback on various travel forums. Personal experience is what counts, and I am pleased to report that we didn't get discouraged. We visited this busy, historical place in March 2012 on a day-trip from Mijas Costa, Spain. A tour bus took us to the port of Tarifa, where we boarded... More

This is well worth half an hour of your time to look around. The museum has some really nice ancient artefacts from several different time periods and also some great decor. Maybe not on a par with places like the Alhambra or Mesquite but well worth a look if staying in Tangier.

Finally, got to visit the Casbah. Although it was just a day trip to Tangier, we got a very detailed walking tour of the Casbah courtesy of our guide Said - look up Said Tours

Suggestions: if you don't want a guide, (don't do the Hansel and Gretal crumbs to find your way back!) use a mini taxi which are inexpensive. You will find more people speaking French than English for their second language. Remember speaking louder does not make you understood better!.

We had been discouraged from lots of other, even experienced travelers, to avoid going to the Casbah but we decided to do it anyway, with a guide, and it was the highlight of our trip (we went to Spain and weren't that impressed but loved Morocco), my kids (13, 15, 21) thought it was exotic and interesting and we weren't... The kasbah was absolutely excellent. Do not hesitate to go to the upper terrace cafe (or tea-room), order 'the a la menthe' and enjoy the view and atmosphere. A little bit more expensive, but worth every dirham. Staff was very polite, spoke some English. Do not let the "guides" goof yourself, the team-room is opened for everybody, not the hotel... More

People confuse the Casbah and the Medina. In the Medina, we were pestered by hawkers and souvenir sales. Many think that is the Casbah. It is not. The Casbah is the fort overlooking the bay. You enter through a gate and the area is much less commercial. BUT beware of the children beggars. They belong in school. Do not take... More
