It's nice to see a historical and holy place still used a lot by the locals (for prayer). The square is very chaotic. We recommend to get a guide or at least go with a guide book as there are many temples with different stories. Everyday at 16.20, the Goddess Kumari looks from a window in her temple courtyard, so... A bit disconcerting to having to pay to enter Durbar Square but when I was there I walked out straight into the streets of Thamel and could have got in that way without paying. I know World Heritage Sites need a lot of uptake but the entrance fee could put you off. Plenty to see.

Spend the day just strolling around and taking in the sights and sounds of chaos.

The local people have to keep the area clean. They have to maintain the buildings, so that people can view them as it was 15yrs ago. In the evening couples sit all around the monuments and eating and drinking.

My favorite was looking at the craftsmanship of the buildings. There is so much woodwork in each building. We paid a guy 600R for a guided tour of which was worth maybe 200. The karma sutra temple is, of course, my favorite. A little confused on the winged statue as to whether it's vishnu or the vehicle of vishnu. Anyways,... More

It was interesting going to the squares and seeing some of the temples and the cultural areas. I didnt like the fact that EVERYWHERE you turned, there were people trying to see you cheap souvenirs that were made in other countries. Worth checking the square out though

Like all the Durbar Squares in Kathmandu Valley the architecture is great. Downside is the large number of tourists, which also implies a lot of people trying to get some of your money.

The mix of people here was great - all religions, ages and visitors alike - used but locals as a route through the city - did not know where to look first as so much to take in and absorb - just loved it

Worth visiting if you love Nepalese architecture! Also there are plenty of options to shop around. But always negotiate!

We visited during the Holi Festival on 7 March 2012. It was great. Music, colour, people and lots of fun.
