I was really looking forward to this. I had read so much positive review about Thai trains. Alas the overpowering smell of the toilet, no doors on sleeping areas, and lights on all night have made me think twice about catching more long distance trains. Was ok, but I was so tired the day I arrived almost not worth it... More

I like the bed (lower berth w/window), the linens are nice. I like having a bathroom, and people sell food on the train at stops. The clickety-clack puts me to sleep. Try to get a bed in the middle of the car, not near the air conditioner on one end, and the bathroom on the other end.

Thailand is not known for its train service, but this one does offer its charms and conveniences. Boarding at 7PM, dine on board, sleep on the seat-turned-into-bed for one. Make sure you travel with a companion.

This was a fun thing to do ~ once. The staff was friendly and efficient, the ride was bumpy, one restroom was a hole in the floor but the other was an American style toilet. I admit to screaming out the window of the restroom somewhere in the northern Thai jungle because I was just so "icked-out" by the thought... More

Backpacker style fun! A must if you're in Thailand. Overnight Bangkok to Chiang Mai both second class and first class suites are fine. Bring your own food and drinks if you don't want to pay for average eats onboard.

This is a great option for the budget traveler. Comfortable, but not always quiet means to get where you are going and save spending the night in the hotel. The problem comes in the train stops where soup and drink vendors are sure to disrupt your rest as they are hocking their goods as you are trying to get some... More

The night train was supposed to take around 14 hours but somehow it ended up taking 3 hours longer. However, when we got on it was pretty late so we read our books for an hour or so then fell asleep till morning. The ride is super bumpy so you may be woken up a couple times in the night.... More

I've taken this journey twice now and once in reverse and my favourite way is the 2nd class non AC sleeper. Its not too cold at night and you can have the window open for pictures and the feel of the wind in your face. Don't expect to get to your destination on time, but this has to be the... More

without a doubt the best travel experience of my life. We went to the restaurant on the train and were met with smoke from the kitchen and semi-drunk waiters partying to what seemed like music from a Thai version of The Eurovision Song Contest. All the windows were open and people were smoking, drinking and laughing as we drove through... More

We took the train to Chaing Mai.we were four and had a bunk section just for us. No way to sit comfortly on the bunks before they are transfered into bunk beds. The train's contnous rough mouvement makes sleeping hard compared to the comfort of the VIP bus we took from Phuket to Bangkok. They also charged 100 bahts for... More
