This temple is easily seen from the old city and surrounding areas, it appears as almost golden jewel surrounded by a sea of green mountains. There are lots of temples in Chiang Mai and older ones then this but I don't think you can say you've been to Chiang Mai unless you visit this temple. Get a taxi there because... more

Chiang Mai is not as hot as other areas of Thailand. The temple is very nice. The views are also very nice, but so is any other mountain you climb in any country. I walked up with my girlfriend. It's a 10K walk from the shrine on the bottom so I wouldn't suggest it. To get up to the temple... more

Took a song thew (red truck) to Doi Suthep from the Tha Phae gate area of the old city. Cost including round trip plus 90 minutes of waiting for us was 500 bhat. The ride up is fairly long but there is a noticeable difference in temperature when you get to the top. Doi Suthep would be much more relaxing... more

Us girls took the cable car and the boys walked up the 306 steps. We have since found out that it is good luck to walk up the steps. Oh well, we did walk down. There seemed to be alot of people but we never really felt crowded. We took a walk around the platform first and saw the awesome... more

This is a great place to visit, but it has become all popular with tourists. The views over the city are great and the ride up exhilarating - Thai drivers are not noted for obeying road markings! On the down side, there are crowds, tourist stalls and a lack of the peace and serenity that once ruled. Chiang Mai is... more

I wasn't truly enamored by Doi Suthep. I guess I was expecting something more special than the temples in Bangkok. I boarded a red songthaew from the main road to get to the temple. The driver had to wait for more tourists before we took off. It was a dizzying ride up on winding roads to get to the temple,... more

Amazing experience, and wonderful views over the surrounding countryside. Lots of travel agents in Chiang Mai offer this trip as a half day tour in the morning for about 500B p/person and it’s well worth doing. I suggest catching the cable car up, and walking back down. The cable car is very cheap, I think about 30B (your tour should... more

The temple is very busy but that doesn’t seem to detract from its appeal. There are a lot of Thai people there as it is a place of pilgrimage for Buddhists. The road up is very steep and winding which was fun for riding a motorbike up, although be warned the last bend is a U-turn which can catch you... more

Doi Suthep is perched on a hill alike many temples in the Chiang Mai region. Then again they make the most beautiful ones don't they? Doi Suthep is no exception. As you drive up, you will hit a Hmong tribe village where the car park is. Many tour buses wait around here too. There are two ways to get up... more

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep located above Chaing Mai was a beautiful and spiritual experience. Why did it take my breath away and make me feel like crying? I don't know but but I received blessings from monks, prayed at the feet of Budda, hung bells in honor of my departed family, and rung the bells. I can't put it... more
