This type of water puppetry dates back to the 11th century, about 1,000 years ago. It started as a way to rid rice plantations of evil spirits, and soon grew into entertainment for ancient villages, and is unique to Northern Vietnam (though it's now shown in Saigon as well). Now, watching puppet shows of any kind may sound really boring... more

I loved the water puppets and was enthralled for almost the entire show. Technically it is amazing what they can do with the puppets, and the entire effect is beautiful. I am a nearly-thirty year old and felt like a little kid enjoying this show. My brother (also nearly-thirty) was slightly less amused but still glad to have seen it.... more

I probably wasn't in the right state of mind to enjoy the show. The leg room was tiny, and it was very uncomfortable to have to sit there for about an hour. With the surface of the water as a stage, the show was interesting (at first), but not quite entertaining. Because it was entirely in Vietnamese, I couldn't get... more

You have to go and see this for the fun of it and the 'cultural' experience. It is like something you have never seen before and will never see again! It does get a little boring after about 10 mins so don't expect extreme excitement, but if u can see the funny side of it, it's just so random! more

This was very culturally enlightening, and very entertaining. For those who found it boring, I would suggest beer... it helps. Air conditioning is lovely and cool, and the theater is pleasant. Watch out for the courting cockerils who produce an egg and then a chick. Overall, well worth 40,000 VND!! more

We paid for the cheap seats - which if truth be known are not actually that far from the stage since the theatre is small. After about 10 minutes i was waiting for the end, i found it boring, unimpressive - and at one point had to tell my daughter not to go to sleep. There is no doubt that... more

Thoroughly enjoyed the experience of sitting in a comfortable, air conditioned auditorium for an hour of pure entertainment. The program was presented as a series of short vignettes and although all in Vietnamese, they were easily understandable. Each was so short that it was impossible to get bored and the whole thing represented great value for money. You could only... more

This is a traditional show - you don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand the story and if you are visiting a foreign country don't be so arrogant to expect 'subtitles or translation' Just enjoy it for what it is and maybe read a bit about it before you go. Lasts just over an hour, sure not everyone... more

Thang Long water puppet is a show that becomes a tradition for thousand years in North Vietnam. Because the show performed on the surface of ponds and rice-fields thousand years ago, it is also performed on the same way in the theatre nowadays. The stage contains a small ponds with greenery water and bamboo curtains at the back to hide... more
