If you want to venture outside the main Angkor complex, this is a good temple to visit. It is two hours one way by tuktuk from Siem Reap proper, so prepare water and snacks ahead. This temple is left in ruins and shows how the European colonists first found the majority of the Angkor temples. You can explore fallen walls... More

Wow...what a place... This was actually the first temple that we came to see during our trip to Cambodia. I think we should have saved it to be our last! :) This temple is quite remote and requires a bit of a drive (I would recommend a car/bus vs. a tuk tuk!)...plus there is a $5 entry fee per person...but... At the end of our 6 days in Siem Reap, I insisted that my family all come with me to Beng Mealea because I had read all the rave reviews on Trip Advisor. They were a bit reluctant as it was 38 degrees and a 60 minute drive with transport costs to match. (plus $5 entry fee pp) After having... More

If you want to see a temple in ruins rather than one that is restored, then this is the place to go. From the moment you see the tumbled down wall spewing out of the entrance gate you know you're in for a different experience. Trees and their roots grow in, on and around all sectors of the temple. The... More

This was the last temple we saw in the Siem Reap area. After visiting Ta Prohm and Banteay Srei this place revived my feelings towards this ancient kingdom. I left both Ta Prohm and Banteay Srei feeling annoyed and frustrated by the giant umbrella-toting Asian tour groups. They no longer feel like ancient temples but a Disney world of sorts.... More

Beng Mealea is aptly named the "Jungle" temple because it IS in the jungle! It is about 40 miles outside Siem Reap, and involves about a 1.25 to 1.50-hour's drive. This temple is "in the raw" that is, it is "in ruins" and without any restoration. The temple is overrun by trees and vines sprouting out from the ruins and... More

Beng Mealea is about a 45 minute drive outside of Siem Reap, but it is well worth the effort to get to. Being a little farther afield means there are less visitors, and more importantly you get out into the Cambodian countryside. The temple itself is amazing. To wander about the temple in its ruined state is a treat and... More

I saw four temples during my stay in Siem Reap and this was definitely my favourite. It's quite a drive out of town which made it a little expensive but absolutely worth it. You can climb over piles of rubble, under and over trees, through dark tunnels etc and it's just so much fun. I generally find temples and old... More

Beng Mealea was our favourite temple due to its adventurous atmosphere and beauty that has naturally occured through being consumed by the jungle. It was a long drive out of town and not covered in our angkor ticket but totally worth it. Our tuk tuk driver who we had hired for the previous two days to go around angkor drove... More
