I was staying in Sultanahmet so from a paper kiosk I bought the equivalent to a London Oyster card for the trams and trains an AKBIL ticket and you top it up. Caught the tram from Sultanahmet all the way to Kabatas. Within the station you get the funicular up to Taksim. Then walk down the main street and shop!... More

Though it became too crowded in last years, Beyoğlu has always been the ad-hoc center of Istanbul. You can have a visit any time of day. There are 100s of bars, restaurants and clubs. Very good place especially for univ students.

This area is great if you have done the historical things and perhaps want shopping or Turkish atmosphere. Some super back streets with odd shops and cafes, hamams etc. Great for a wander.

A trip to Istanbul would be incomplete without a night out in Beyoglu. There is every kind of bar, restaurant, night club, and cafe you could imagine. Also, many galleries and places to shop. Don't miss it!

Walk across the Galat Bridge, and pop into the Tunel entrance for a one stop ride on this wonderful old Tube Train, which has survived from almost Victorian times. Then start your walk along the colourful main avenue of Beyoglu. Pop into a pastry shop for an apple tea and a pistachio slice, and then sit on a ledge outside... More

Our Istanbul Eats culinary walking tour took us all over this fascinating cosmopolitan neighborhood. So in addition to eating a myriad of local cuisine, we got to see many of the streets of this neighborhood, including the main street that mixes modern conveniences and chain shops with lots of very atmospheric shops selling things like handmade chocolates and tripe soup.... If you want to do a bit of European-style shopping, after taking in the Grand Bazaar this will seem like a different era. It's busy---check out the nostalgic train at Tunel, too. If your travel experience is better if there's a Starbucks around you, then stop by (I do, so I did ;-). Otherwise, keep walking and enjoy the old... More
