When we "booked" a night at Ein Bokek last December, we reached the hotel only to discover we had NO reservation. A kind bedoin, Younis, gave us a ride to Ein Gedi instead and we were blessed to enjoy the healthy family atmosphere there. Ein Gedi Nature Reserve is by the Dead Sea about an hour south of Jerusalem. The road from Jerusalem is safe, but not scenic. It passes through the barren Judean desert, passing an occasional Bedouin camp dotted with goats and possibly camels.
