Still in use, though I'm told people have cusions on the impossible benches during services.
If you are planning visit in the Italian center in Jerusalem, go and see the synagogue. it's decoration is beautiful originally brought from Italy. Also on the entrance floor, there's a chamber with painted ceiling exactly like in the Vatican, really beautiful, worth visiting there. It's not a big place, but if you have time and near by, go there.
The synagogue and museum present Italian Jewish items that are quite amazing, beautiful and interesting. I only wish they had a coffee table book for sale, because you weren't allowed to take pictures. Among the items were several Ketubahs from the 1700s and a very old circumcision kit (made me cross my legs).
