Monastery built by Georgians in 11th C. on the site were the tree of the Holy cross was grown. Famous Georgian 12th C poet Shota Rustaveli's only fresco is preserved in the maiun church of the Monastery.
The monastery was built in the 11th century by Georgians, over earlier remenants of Byzantine buildings. It was sold to the Greek Orthodox church in the 17th century. The bell tower was built in the 18th century.
It is believed that in this site grew te olive tree that gave its wood to the cross of Jesus.
