This is an ancient indian site, much older than Macchu Pichu. And in poorer shape. We got a english speaking guide, who we mostly understood. He had a lot of "very important" information. The site is, in our standard, half hearted restored. It was ok too have seen, now I can say, I have seen Sites much older than Machu... More

Unfortunately there is still a long way to go for the site and the archeological teams. However, the informations from it are great it is just a pity that some statues had been removed to i.e. La Paz. However, great site to visit before going to Machu Piccu.

Ok, if you're traveling and looking for casinos, fancy hotels and such, you might not enjoy this place; but if you're going to Bolivia to really know about a totally different culture, and if you're into archaeology and ancient architecture, you need to visit Tiwanaku. The museum isn't that great (we expected more of it) but the ruins are really... More

You drive for 90 mins & arrive at a huge impressive museum, but inside you see just 1 statue & a small chipboard cross! Walking round you notice the building, opened in 2002 is already falling apart. Next is a better museum with lots of exhibits but little information & the guides whizz through very fast. As for the site it... More

Tiwanaku is on a par with Machu Picchu and other world-class archaeological sites in South America. Although far from complete, excavations done over the last 20 years have uncovered dramatic structures, including an ancient pyramid. Most fascinatingly, after centuries of Inca and Spanish domination, Aymara indians in Bolivia have taken it up as a symbol of their newfound clout. The... More

Tiwanaku is one of the highlights of my trip! The site is terrific, full of misterious and most of questions about tiwanaku civilizatin is still unanswered. It is very important to go on guided tour otherwise you will see only ruins and will not appriciate the place. I was fascinated by the stone faces of different races and monolitic people.... More

*Disclaimer: we went with a very knowledgeable guide from the Turisbus* After about an hour and a half of driving from La Paz, we arrived at the ruins. First, we visited the museum which has interesting artifacts from the time period of Tiwanaku. Without the guide the explain the significance of the items, it would have been hard to get... More

Fascinating with a local guide, I had no idea of the history of the place, and it was an interesting and eye opening experience to find out!
