beware this event is only held every other week now...the square was not a welcoming place
We seemed to be here every day! It's the main place for busses and taxis. Some OK shops around, a market some days, and Bingo(!) during the midday siesta.
This is the main square in the heart of town and offers visitors a pleasant stroll with people-watching a special aspect. We saw local women sitting around in their colourful dresses under the trees playing bingo. Not exciting but good for an hour or so with plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby.
Noumea central is a dump - so much more apparent when you've venture there from Anse Vata. It's like you're in a different country, the difference is so pronounced. Really, there is ZERO civic pride here. But hey, I guess if you come from Ethiopia, then I guess it might be a step up.
This is the main park for Nouméa, and it is the place where all the native idlers gather because they don't have a job (the best "boulots" having been taken by the French). Central Noumea is rather run down once you leave the coastal strip and the Place de Cocotiers is surrounded by streets that need a face lift. The square is fine with its water feature and flame trees and worth a visit, but do not have too many expectations as you might be dissapointed

I'm glad we viisited it although it was a bit like an Australian "city square" but with trees. Having...

This place I think is a bit over rated. It is not bad, quite safe, and had stalls there everyday when we were there during Christmas. The stalls though are a bit bear, did not find much of anything of interest. Next to all the souvenir shops, all walking distance from the centre. I would recommend visiting the information centre...

A pleasant open space, paved and reasonably clean. None of the water features were full or working and some repairs are needed. Market stalls are sometimes operating; the ambience is safe and with plenty of trees etc.. Many of the local buses arrive/depart from the square.
