I had a great time visiting the citadel although with so many great things to see and do in Cairo it was not my favorite part. We visited the mosque and enjoyed the wonderful views of the city from so high up. The Citadel is a massive fortress begun in 1176 by Salah ad-Din. Completely walled, the complex was the home of Egypt's rulers for 700 years. When in cairo get a guide to take you to Alexandria to see these places. Citidel is tropical and beautiful. You have the freedom to roam the castle which is left in all its glory, even the execution room. The views are magnificant. TIP: However just outside there is a fish museum. The Citadel was built in the 12th Century and has had many additions over the years. It offers a fabulous view of Cairo from the terrace.
