This was really hyped by friends who had been there, once I got inside, I understood why. Well worth the detour into the Coptic Area!

This church is full of suprises, it is built on the remains of a Roman fort's foundations and thus 'hangs' over them. There is a window in the vestry floor where they perform baptisms that allows you to see down into the foundations. The church is in a complex that includes the remains of the fort and the Coptic useum... More

The Hanging Church, also called as Muallaq Kanisa, is considered the oldest church in the area of Al-Fustat (Old Cairo or Coptic Cairo). As soon as we come out of Cairo’s Mar Girgis Metro Station, we find the modern building of Coptic Museum near the ruins of Babylon Fortress just in front with magnificent and imposing building of Greek Orthodox... It is one of the oldest churches in Egypt built on the rest of Babylon Fortress, the Roman fortress. Once you enter the church you really feel the smell of the holy place. It is full of marvelous Icons on the wall for Saints. They are about 110 wonderful colored icons. You can see the wood Ceiling like Noah's ship,... More

Coptic is the ancient word for Egyptians, and this is one of the Coptic Christians’ oldest churches, much older than any of the famous cathedrals of Europe. There’s very pretty engraving and inlay work inside and a small window in the floor where you can see the remains of the Roman towers in the basement that the church is “hanging”... More

The church is built on the top of a Roman tower (which you can see through a window set into the floor - off to the right of the central aisle). The pulpit is supported by 13 pillars (all different) that are supposed to represent Christ and his 12 apostles. The black pillar is alleged to be Judas. The church... More
