Really it is, It is the oldest mosque in Africa & of course in Egypt. It was built in 642 AD, as the center of the newly-founded capital of Egypt, Fustat.

Historically this mosque is important as it is the first mosque in Africa (founded by the Arab general who first conquered Egypt) and therefore one of the earliest mosques in Islam. This mosque represents where Islam started in Egypt. It's a brilliant place to start your tour of Egypt and Cairo.

It is preferred to visit the mosque in the Holy month of Ramadan when you can feel the spirit of the place when it is fully crowded with people.
