Abydos is about 3 hours from Luxor but is well worth the visit particularly if you have a guide to show you around. We tied this in with Dendera and made it a whole day trip. The very last part of the journey (about 20 mins) is as part of a convoy. The temple was fairly quite when we arrived... more

With a day in hand in Luxor thought we'd escape the crowds and go to Abydos described by Conde nast as 'the original Lost Civilisation". Well, not any more.. now its well frequented and you have to travel in convoy which goes dangerously fast ("wacky races" !!), and of course you arrive at the same time as everyone else. It seems that anything to do with Ramses II is either quite special or huge! The Abydos temple is made up of several rooms which are well preserved. Lots of color remains and photo's can be taken (without flash). Well worth visiting. more
